The Importance of Community
As Parents’ Day is celebrated, let’s join in from wherever we are in the world to honour the love and labour of parents and caregivers and the importance of community in holding them up.
In today’s world of isolated nuclear families, many parents feel lonelier than ever. But parenting was never meant to be done solo. Parenting is a learned behavior, shaped by inherited legacies and the environment in which we raise our children. By moving beyond the nuclear model to more communal and science-based forms of child-rearing, we can strengthen parents’ toolkits and break cycles inherited from previous generations. Broader family and community networks coupled with parent training don’t just soften the load—they transform parenting outcomes.
Parents thrive when:
- Communities create safe spaces for support and honest conversation
- Schools partner with families, not just instruct children
- Workplaces implement caregiving policies and provide parenting resources to support families
- Governments fund accessible, subsidised activities for parents and children to recharge together. ç
Let’s build a culture where we show up for parents, so we all feel seen and supported, allowing us to be our best for ourselves and our families.
