As a parenting instructor, one of the most profound questions I’ve encountered is: “What do I do when my child is exploring their sexual orientation and/or gender identity?” This question touches the core of parental love and concern, often revealing a whirlwind of emotions and uncertainties. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help parents navigate this journey with compassion and understanding.

 

    1. Find a Quiet Space
      The first step is finding a quiet space to process your thoughts and emotions. This space should allow you to focus inwardly and gather your reflections.
    2. Take Deep Breaths
      Take deep breaths to calm your mind and body, reducing stress and anxiety. It’s a simple yet powerful way to center yourself.
    3. Allow Yourself to Experience All Reactions
      It’s natural to experience a wide range of emotions. Allow yourself to feel everything without judgment. These reactions are valid and part of the human experience.
