Neurodiversity Celebration Week
At Gordon Parenting, we are strong advocates for neurodiversity and are dedicated to helping families build understanding and connection. Research shows that parent-based interventions can significantly influence both parents and the behavior of their neurodiverse children. Here are three Parent Effectiveness Training tips for engaging with neurodiverse kids.
Active Listening
Create a space safe for your child to express themselves without judgement – be it through verbal communication, writing or art – and actively listen to them, so they feel heard. It may be helpful to set time aside with your child to calmly and patiently check in on their feelings and expectations as some neurodiverse children may need more time to process.
Set Clear Expectations
Involve your child in setting family rules to give them a sense of ownership and a clear understanding of what is expected. This also helps to provide a familiar structure for children.
Problem-Solving Skills
Collaborate to find solutions to challenges. Encourage your child to come up with ideas for resolving issues, which fosters independence and problem-solving skills. And remember when a child’s behaviour isn’t ideal, avoid labels such as ‘you’re naughty’ and describe the behaviour instead, such as ‘when you hit, it hurts’.
Implementing these P.E.T. strategies can create a supportive environment where neurodiverse children feel valued and understood. Each child is unique, so adapting these strategies to fit their individual needs is key.
