International Men’s Day: “Supporting Men and Boys”

This year’s International Men’s Day theme, “Supporting Men and Boys,” calls us to act—not just to recognize a challenge, but to be part of the solution.

Men’s mental and emotional health is facing a crisis, rooted in long-standing social messages like “man up” and “don’t show weakness.” These messages start early, conditioning boys to hide vulnerability—a pattern that often continues into adulthood, making it harder for men to cope with stress, build close relationships, and care for their mental health and wellbeing.

As parents, educators and community members, we have a decisive role in changing this narrative.

How? One way is teaching and modelling emotional literacy through Active Listening.

When a man or boy in your care is struggling, try these simple but impactful steps:

• Validate feelings: “I can see you’re really upset about that.”
• Listen : Offer your undivided attention without jumping to fix the problem.
• Trust in their strength: Believe they can find solutions when they feel seen and heard.

Through active listening, we can help break harmful cycles and raise emotionally resilient boys who grow into secure, compassionate men.

Supporting men’s mental health starts at home, with caregivers who choose connection over judgment.

Let’s make empathy and active listening the new standard of strength for every generation.
